Don’t always listen to the Polish weightlifter
It’s that time of year when my girlfriend and I watch Harry Potter.
(The movies are ok, but I’ll leave that for another day.)
Yesterday, I snapped up a quote by Albus Dumbledore from the last minutes of Goblet of Fire:
“Dark times lie ahead of us and there will be a time when we must choose between what is right and what is easy.”
I would turn it up a notch.
It’s not “there will be a time”. That time is every day.
Without thinking about it, you’re always choosing between what’s right and what’s easy.
Exercise vs. Netflix
Veggies vs. candy
Having the tough conversation vs. nodding your head “yes”
Most take the easy road, which is fine, but know the consequences.
Weightlifting legend Jerzy Gregorek throws a few words of wisdom into the fire:
“Hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life.”
Meaning: when eating candy, you have a good time today but you’ll be worse off tomorrow. Eating broccoli might not be as good today, but you set yourself up for tomorrow.
The tough conversation might suck but can also straight out a few issues that've been nagging you in the back of your head.
However…
I would add some nuance to good ol’ Jerzy.
In theory, the hard choices are always best. Veggies are always healthier than candy.
But in reality…
In reality there’s something called the golden mean.
Not allowing yourself some candy once in a while will drive you mad.
And you probably won’t have many friends left by constantly being a pain in their ass with tough conversations.
Pick your battles.
