The “get rich quick” scheme that actually works

This is a damn good quote:

Money, in my opinion, especially big money, is most often a by-product of enthusiasm… When it comes to making money, attitude is the most important thing of all.

I believe this into my bones.

You see, I find a few things to be true about most people:

1. They want to get rich

2. They want to get rich quick

3. Most people in no. 1) and 2) give up when they realize it’s not easy. But if they sniff up a chance, they’d jump right up on the wagon again.

(There’s also a number 4: because of number 3) a lot of people fall for “get-rich-quick” schemes that don’t work and end up losing them money.

But that’s another story.)

So what does this mean when people pick a career?

The story usually goes:

They seek out 1) and 2), finding some job that “seems ok but pays well”. (Someone very close to me actually said that about my first job: “I don’t fully understand what you’ll do, but at least you have a good salary”)

They get miserable, because they picked the job for the money, not because they might like it.

They end up either:

Not being very good at it - which is not good for making money

Or…

Changing industry - meaning starting over, which is not good for making money

Yikes…

This is the reason Gary’s point is so important.

Let’s face it, your career will go on for a while. And if you’re going to do something for a while and want to get good at it, it’s positive if you…

…actually like doing it.

Seeking out your enthusiasm.

You know, waking up with energy, not being the first one to leave every day, wanting to read up on the latest trends, seeking out people’s feedback to get better, thinking about new ideas when you shower.

With a little bit of enthusiasm you’ll stand out from all the miserable people chasing money.

Money will come before you know it - and you’ll have fun along the way.

Not bad, huh?

P.S. I’m not saying “find your passion”. That’ll paralyze you and you’ll get nowhere. There are a lot of jobs that you’ll like doing.
